We are about 500 metres above sea level. I am not an expert, I'm an interested conservational owner.Sherrylhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04405534589743973581noreply@blogger.comBlogger107125tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3588615569593790619.post-47568144677663961472021-05-01T15:44:00.003+10:002021-05-01T15:44:21.542+10:00Latest photos
It's hard to believe that it's been six years this year since the fire. While we have lost probably 15% of the trees, there are so many new ones growing - both eucalypts and acacias - that the property seems greener than ever. A mild summer this year with some rain helped, of course.

Most mornings we are there, either rosellas or parrots gather on the roof for a gossip and to chase each other around.

What is a covenanted property?

It’s about conservation. About looking
after bush and grasslands that are owned by private citizens. While we have
both state and national parks in Victoria, Trust for Nature helps owners to
ensure their land is kept for flora and fauna and protected from damage and
development.

If you read this blog, you’ll see just how
many elements make up this property. Not just the roos and wallabies and
wombats and echidnas, but the many birds who live here, with their nests in the
bracken and in the trees. As well as that, there are dozens of native plants
I’ve found and identified, and probably many dozens more I’m not aware of.

A hundred acres with bordering properties
and areas of bush that connect with a state park to the north means we are part
of an important corridor for wildlife, allowing it to move around freely and
eat and live without harassment. It's a really important part of conservation in Victoria. There are few bush properties of this size.

After 16 years, we have made the decision
to sell. We would love to find new owners who care as much about the property
as we do. Who not only get excited about the wallabies and roos and wombats
that come to eat on the grass area around the house, but who want to make sure
it all stays as it is, for the future. Did you know in Australia that the rate
of deforestation is accelerating? As is the loss of species? It’s hard to
fathom how this can keep happening.

So we’ve had interested buyers who want to
farm goats, have horses, let their kids roar around on trail bikes. A while ago
we had someone who wanted to use it for a paintball business. We’ve had to say
no to all of them. As we go for walks and still see new birds or find new
native orchids after so many years of exploring, we marvel at our good fortune
and reconfirm how important it is to keep the covenant secure and cherished, not
seen as an obstacle.

You, too, can watch wallabies eat around the house before dinner, or wake to a bunch of noisy rosellas on the lawn (or magpies lately). You can explore the rocks in the NW area, or wander down to the creek and listen to the frogs. This is what it means to have a property of this size and live in the peace and quiet and learn about the land you are on, and look after it. It's not "a cheap bit of bush" - it's a large property with conservation front and centre, and a house designed to withstand bushfires beyond the current requirements.

All of the bracken came back, of course, and grew over my head in some places. But worse were the thistles. Not just Scotch thistles, which we have always had a few of, but another variety with bright green leaves that grew everywhere to huge heights.

It was somewhat therapeutic when I gave up normal weed procedures and took to about 200 of them with a home-adapted machete! It was horrible hot work but was worth it as since then the number of them has greatly reduced.

However, other weeds have emerged, in particular a pink-flowering thing called Centaury. Never seen it before, and now it just keeps coming. The only satisfying thing about that one is it pulls out easily, so it soon becomes a habit that every time I go for a walk, I try to pull out at least 30 or more. I'm pretty much on top of it these days.

On the other hand, there are native plants growing now that before were fairly sparse. One is the vanilla lily, of which we now have dozens in different spots. The bosseia has come back well, and there has been a big expansion in Running Postman with its bright red flowers. Lomandra has grown everywhere, which in turn has led to many more butterflies this year (I read somewhere that the butterflies lay their eggs in lomandra).

And there have been a few entirely new plants I haven't seen before, such as the Wallflower orchid below. With our efforts to keep weeds and rubbish plants from the house area, it's meant more native grasses have grown, and so our wallaby is now a regular visitor in the early mornings for breakfast.

So the camera was set up near the wombat hole nearest to the house. The camera has a night setting as well, but here our friendly wallaby has wandered in and is hanging around.

At some point after about three days, something pushes the camera over (which was on a tripod). Could well have been this wombat.

And here is the wombat again (I think) in daylight.
We set it up near the house and these are from the first week of photos. Meet the wallaby. She's used to the house so we often see her around. For a while we watched her joey in the pouch and then it was out, scampering around.
If you saw us walking along, waving a large stick in front of us, you might think us mad. But this is what we are trying to avoid - walking into the web of one of these. They are St Andrews spiders (I think) and are enjoying catching all the grasshoppers bounding around at the moment.
(Note: thanks to Snail, I now know this is a golden orb weaver - see comments.)
The array and numbers of wildflowers this spring and summer continues to astound me. Where in the past there have been small clumps of things like Blue Pincushions (above) and Vanilla-lilies, now there are swathes of them - in several places the Vanilla-lilies are in patches metres square. In past years I've had to go searching for them. Yes, the bushfire probably cleared the way for them to sprout but I suspect the huge amount of rain over winter and spring had a lot more to do with it.
While slogging my way around attacking weeds, I've found some plants I've never seen before like this Everlasting.
I've been waging a huge battle over the past three months against a massive weed invasion (also an after effect of the bushfire). It seems that the bare ground was a big opportunity for the weeds to move in, especially because neither of my neighbours with paddocks seem to do any weed control. First it was a species of huge green thistle (not scotch thistle) with thick hollow stems, and now it's dandelions. Massive clumps of the things that are now starting to go to seed, so it's a fight to see who wins. I think they are! But I can't afford to give up.Sherrylhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04405534589743973581noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3588615569593790619.post-4872051390450229202016-11-13T10:41:00.000+11:002016-11-13T10:41:24.268+11:00More spring wildflowers

In twelve years, we've never seen so much water on the property. This is one of the tracks, where the water is now 6-8cm deep in places. Water is running everywhere, from high points all the way down to the creek. Quite amazing.
Amazing how much rain we have had. There is a stream running down the central track, and it's growing algae and duckweed! This is the creek, which has probably even more water in it now, since we've had rain all day today.
This creek is dry three years out of four.
We often see this wallaby mother near the house. Recently she's had a joey hanging out of her pouch as she eats. Now the joey is out and about, running in wide circles around her (father was present today for the first time) like a mad toddler finding its bearings!
With the amount of rain we've had, the sprouting from the gum trees is continuing, and in some trees there are signs of canopy growth, too.
There is now a lot of bracken making it look green, but underneath the bracken the ground is still bare and/or black. With the continued rain, we're starting to get grass and various green native plants growing (even a native violet or two) but nothing substantial yet. It will take until spring to see what is really going to regrow.
An example of sprouting from the trunk. This one is quite big and the branches at least a centimetre in diameter. It will be interesting to see how much of this trunk sprouting survives into full branches. Some of it has already fallen off.
We've now had no really good rain for a few weeks, and things are either slowing down a lot or, in some cases, dying off.
In January I found these burnt fern nubs growing in the dry creek bed - the first of this species I've seen. But with no rain, by the end of February they were all dead.
The wallaby seems to be used to us now and hangs around the house more often!

With the new growth, as well as bracken I'm seeing some of the native vegetation coming back more - lots of rushes, some heath, some bosseia, and very occasionally a bluebell or a vanilla orchid. A fair few grasshoppers and dragonflies. However butterfly numbers are very low. At this time of year there would normally be dozens everywhere I walk, but I'm lucky to see a couple at the moment.

A lot of the ground looks greenish with the bracken, but when I look closer, there is no leaf litter and it's all still bare. With the heavy rain, a lot of the ash has washed down into hollows.
A few of the bigger birds are around, including kookaburras. A few wrens and finches still, and occasionally bigger birds but not many. It may take a while for the insect population to build up to create a food chain again.Sherrylhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04405534589743973581noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3588615569593790619.post-74887939781842870192016-01-03T16:51:00.001+11:002016-01-03T16:53:02.859+11:00Last week of December - more green

But with the bracken regrowth come the birds returning. We now have finches, wrens and wagtails in the thicker bracken, and with the fuzzy new growth at the tops of some trees, we have magpies, cockatoos and kookaburras as well as smaller birds.
This is, I think, a forest kingfisher, and I don't remember ever seeing one here before.
Looking across to the hills from near Lancefield - it's easy to see where the fires were now as the tree canopy dies and drops leaves.
Most trees have now lost more than half of their leaves, but there is a fuzz of new bracken in patches here and there.
In other places it's just a few plants. In most areas it's still bare. The north side of the property is the only place where grass is growing well, and at the bottom of a couple of gullies. More rain would be good.
Today I saw a lot of this in different places. I think it's a form of fungus. The orange stuff is spongy and fungus-like.
This is lovely to see - one of the microclimates of spongy grass and mossy underneath. It's at the base of a gully that funnels a lot of rain through, and when it's really wet, you can see the water running. This is the only area that survived the fire, and is now the first to come back and look really green. Most of the other gullies are also showing signs of green along their bottom areas.Sherrylhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04405534589743973581noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3588615569593790619.post-81946474842233007032015-11-03T15:47:00.000+11:002015-11-03T15:47:02.060+11:0031 October

Over the past 8 years, I have enjoyed taking hundreds of photos of everything on our bush block, from spring flowers to echidnas and roos to insects and birds and trees and fungi. Now, the blog has suddenly attained a special significance for me. It's become a record of everything that was.

On 6th October, a large bush fire that burned 4000 hectares in the Lancefield-Benloch area in Victoria (Australia) also burned our block. It didn't just burn bits here and there, as fires can sometimes do. It burned all 40 hectares from south to north, from west to east. The only thing left is a small oasis in the north-eastern section where our house - miraculously - still stands. I guess this is probably due to several things: the way we built the house to be as fire-proof as possible, with no gardens and as little vegetation around as possible, plus we took down 14 trees two years ago; the hard work of the fire helicopter crews who we believe dumped at least one lot of water on us; miraculous good luck.

But the rest of it is, as our neighbour put it, "a moonscape". Piles of firewood away from the house are not even a pile of coals - they have completely disappeared. Many trees are blackened for 60-80% of their height. Other trees have been so thoroughly burned that there are holes where their roots used to be. No doubt many trees are burned on the inside and are now in danger of falling (quite a few have already). And every vestige of wildlife that I have seen is gone - frogs, insects, lizards, and who knows what else. Probably all the possums, numbats, owls, bats and echidnas. I have seen some roos and a wallaby but no signs yet of the wombats.

I'm devastated, but the landscape looks so unreal that it's barely sunk in yet. I feel like everything that I loved about the place is gone - everything that fascinated, excited, intrigued and interested me, let alone everything that gave me joy when I was there.

But I will continue this blog. Friends who know have assured me that regeneration will happen. I am not sure when, because the outlook for rain in the next few months is not good, and summer is coming. But I am trying to have faith that regeneration will come, that plants and animals and insects will return. Still, I wonder how and to what extent.

Until then, I will post some photos of what it was like (and you can go back through this blog for plenty more), and then some photos of what it is like today.
